Historic Cookbook Reprinted

by Michael Garner, docent - OCHS

May 7, 2012 - Pawhuska, Oklahoma

This week marked an historic moment at the Osage County Historical Society (OCHS) Museum in Pawhuska, Oklahoma.

A reprint of the "Triumphs of Women 1911 - 1935 Cookbook" was presented to the Museum by Dale Kiser, a former Pawhuska resident.

It was the fulfillment of a project of over 8 years for Mr. Kiser. "My grandmother Irene Edmonson (Lightener) held on to this cookbook all these years. I've been exploring getting it reprinted for years," said Dale.

The names of all the original contributors are included as well as the historic advertisements that were in the original cookbook.

Shown in the photograph above is: (left to right) Barbara Pease, Manager OCHS Museum; Dale Kiser, Editor and Contributor; and Kathy Swan, Vice President of the Board of Directors, OCHS.

Kathy was also involved in getting this cookbook ready for print.

For the most part, this cookbook is a reprint of a 1920s fundraiser by the Pawhuska Women’s Club whose recipes comprised the book. It was considered a great honor and source of pride for a Club member’s recipe to appear in print.

The first edition of TRIUMPH’S OF WOMEN was published in 1925. The second edition was printed in 1929.

The Pawhuska Women’s Club was the forerunner of the GFWC HEEKO Club. It was formed in 1911 by 20 progressive minded women. Three units (divisions) of interest quickly grew to thirteen with 126 paid members. Annual dues were $1. Coupled with proceeds from TRIUMPH’S OF WOMEN, these amazing pioneers amassed an impressive list of accomplishments.

The first recorded project was a downtown fountain for dogs and horses – a much needed and vital community project. Not inclusive, other projects targeted Pawhuska’s educational system with sewing machines for the high school, hot and cold showers for PHS football players, playground equipment, and Pawhuska’s 1st Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

In addition, the Women’s Club provided public restrooms and promoted installation of tables and ovens for public parks, assisted with Red Cross recruiting – 130 signed up; spearheaded Christmas Gifts for the unfortunates, monies for World War I, and purchased property for Club House Meetings. The Women’s Club began the Pawhuska City Library – acquiring books and providing a librarian’s salary. In 1937, the Women’s Club formally donated its property and assets to the Library.

For 25 years, the Women’s Club was a productive and vital contributor to the formation of Pawhuska. When the Pawhuska Women’s Club disbanded in 1935, its pioneer spirit continued through one unit, the GFWC HEEKO Club. HEEKO is a Native American word that means “Learning” which tied in with this unit’s initial goal of self improvement and study. In 1915, GFWC HEEKO redirected its goals to civic and community welfare.

GFWC HEEKO started the Osage County Historical Society Museum in 1963 and was instrumental in starting the Pawhuska City Hospital and Senior Citizens Center (Young in Heart Center).

TRIUMPH’S OF WOMEN Cookbook is a rare and prized link to a glorious past.

Thanks to Dale Kiser, the GFWC HEEKO Club is making available a reprint of the Pawhuska Woman's Club cookbook originally published in the 1920's. You can get your copy at the Osage County Historical Society Museum for $19.95. The proceeds will benefit the GFWC HEEKO club. The recipes and the memories will benefit you!

Iowa Republican Caucus 2012

A "Surprise" victory by Rick Santorum in the 2012 Iowa Republican Caucus

The Iowa Republican Caucus votes are in.

There are three front runners:

Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, each garnering more than 20% of the votes.

Throughout the evening the lead was passed off between Santorum and Romney, with Romney finally leading Santorum by 8 votes. That is significantly less than 1% of the total votes cast. It would be reasonable to call the race in Iowa a tie.

Santorum's website calls this a surprise, and states he's the only conservative that can beat Mitt Romney.

Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann are reportedly staying in the race, coming in 5th and 6th respectively in the polls.

Newt Gingrich was in the 4th position and has not, as of yet, conceded the race.

Others on the ballot in Iowa included John Huntsman, Herman Cain and Buddy Roemer, none of which gathered even 1% of the vote.

Incidentally, the servers at www.ricksantorum.com were so swamped with people seeking more information about the candidate after the Iowa Caucus that they were frequently unable to serve up his web page. The campaign resolved the issue by forwarding inquiries for the site to a donations page.

The focus will now fall on the New Hampshire Republican primary on January 10th, 2012 to further sort out the field of candidates. One thing is clear tonight - there are 3 front runners for the Republican nomination.

It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. The back porch on the structure had caught fire. Later, Tuesday morning, about 2 am, the Department got a call back to the location, where the house was completely on fire. Later Tuesday, the department put out a grass fire that was started from the cinders of the earlier fire. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Wednesday morning, September 21, 2011, about 2 am the Department responded to a structure fire near the previous fire. The structure was fully involved. There was not anyone in either building and the gas and electric was already cut off on each property. The only apparent harm was to the unused houses.

As the cause for both fires is undetermined, the Department would appreciate anyone knowing anything about these fires informing Fire Chief Gip Allen. He is available Monday through Friday at the Fire Station 8:00 am through 5:00 pm at 900 Lynn Avenue; Pawhuska, OK 74056. You may phone him at (918) 287-4210.
Tag Day – April 2nd Make sure your pet has its ticket home!

It’s a big, scary world out there for cats and dogs that are lost and alone, far from home. Although most pet owners think their pet would never run away, even the most responsible pet owners can be accidentally or unexpectedly separated from their pets. Millions of dogs and cats are taken to animal shelters as strays each year. However, only about 15 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats who end up in shelters without an ID tag or microchip are reunited with their owners.

To reduce the number of stray pets and animals that enter area shelters, NeuterSooner, in partnership with Oklahoma Alliance for Animals, will observe Tag Day as part of a national awareness campaign to encourage all pet owners to tag and micro chip their companion animals. NeuterSooner will provide are residents with one free ID tag per household and additional tags may be purchased for $5. NeuterSooner will also sell spay/neuter vouchers.

When: Saturday, April 2, 2011
Where: Pawhuska Fire Station, 900 Lynn Avenue in Pawhuska, OK
Time: 11 am to 2 pm

Collars with tags are the most effective form of pet identification because they allow anyone to immediately identify a lost cat or dog and contact the owner. Having a collar and tag can allow your pet to be reunited with you within hours or even minutes of becoming separated from you. However, collars can come off or be inadvertently removed which is why micro chips are also an important tool in reuniting pets with owners. Micro chips serve as permanent identification system that will always be with your pet. Nearly all animal shelters across the country routinely scan every animal upon intake for the presence of a microchip. Most veterinary clinics also have microchip scanners. However, micro chips are not readily visible which is why having a micro chip coupled with a collar and tag is important.

All cats and dogs need to wear collars with ID tags along with rabies vaccination tags and required city or county licenses. When possible, include the owner’s name, address, telephone numbers and the pet’s name. If you are limited on space, determine the most important information that would be useful in reuniting you with your pet, such as a cell phone number.

Tag your pet even if you never let him outside. He could slip through an open door and quickly become lost in the neighborhood. If you are traveling, put a temporary tag on your pet with the contact information of someone who knows how to reach you. For cats, use a specially made safety collar with elastic or a break-away clasp which allow the cat to escape if it gets caught furniture, fencing or other objects.

Both tags and micro chips are only effective in reuniting a lost pet with his owner when the owner’s contact information is accurate. Tags should always reflect the most current contact information and micro chips must be registered immediately in the appropriate database. Always update your contact information promptly when you move or get a new phone number.

Not only is having proper identification on your pets good practice under normal circumstances, but it is also vital during times of disaster. These situations are unplanned and unpredictable. Most pet owners would not have the opportunity to obtain a collar and ID tag, let alone a micro chip, in an emergency so having proper identification on your pet ahead of time is vital for disaster preparedness.

Being a responsible pet owner is about more than just providing food, water and shelter. Pet care also includes providing proper identification for your pet.

For more information about NeuterSooner, its programs or Tag Day, please call (918) 332-6341 or visit www.neutersooner.org.

[Submitted by Anita Stepp]

Happy Thanksgiving 2010

Early Christians often celebrated the end of the liturgical year just prior to the beginning of the Advent season with a celebration of thanksgiving to God for the blessings of the past year.

The modern Thanksgiving holiday traces its origins from a 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, where the Plymouth settlers held a harvest feast after a successful growing season. This is the event generally referred to as the "First Thanksgiving."

The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Indians. The traditional Thanksgiving menu often features turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. Americans may eat these foods on modern day Thanksgiving, but the first feast did not consist of these items. On the first feast turkey was any type of fowl that the pilgrims hunted. Pumpkin pie wasn't on the menu because there were no ovens for baking, but they did have boiled pumpkin. Cranberries weren't introduced at this time.
Mingle at the Museums presents: Clay Art Expo and Sale Sept. 17 & 18

Clay Art Expo and Sale Sept. 17 & 18 Pawhuska Oklahoma

OCHS Museum and Osage Nation Museum

Mingle at the Museums

Barbara Pease of the Osage County Historical Society (OCHS) Museum in cooperation with Kathyrn Red Corn of the Osage Nation Museum have collaborated again to bring the ongoing “Mingle at the Museums” series. Sept. 17 and 18 they will present Clay-Art Expo and Sale. On the 17th, the Osage Nation Museum will begin a reception for Anita Fields at 6 p.m. in tandum with a coffee and desert reception for Victoria Vazquez at the OCHS Museum. This two-day Mingle will feature both clay-artists in an alliance of art show-and-sales beginning Saturday morning at both museums.

Victoria Vasquez

Vasquez will present three one-hour workshops at the OCHS Museum (10 a.m.-11a.m., 11 a.m.-12 noon and 1 p.m. -2 p.m.) Simultaneously, Fields will hold her workshops at the Osage Nation Museum. According to Pease, she and Red Corn have coordinated the demos so visitors can enjoy both potters’ exposition at various times. Vazquez and Fields will have their unique creations on display and for purchase at the respective museums where they will appear. Proceeds from this event go to benefit each museum equally and will further the “Mingle at the Museums” presentations, bringing more educational and entertaining features to Pawhuska.

According to her web site, Victoria Vazquez learned traditional southeastern woodlands stye of pottery making in 1990 from her mother, Anna Sixkiller Mitchell. Vazquez’s mother, a full-blood Cherokee, who over the last 35 years revived the art for the Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma served as her master tutor in clay-art. “Although I did not begin showing and selling my pottery until 1998, I feel as if this is what I was meant to be doing,” said Vazquez. She said that she loves digging the clay, creating something new and carrying on the tradition that her mother started. Vazquez specializes in re-creating early mound-builder and eastern woodlands style pottery.

Vazquez is a native Oklahoman who lives on a cattle ranch with her husband, Bruce near Welch, Oklahoma. For her pottery and sculptures she uses clay that she finds and digs up on their property and other areas of northeast Oklahoma. The pottery itself is created by hand using the coil method. She uses natural tools such as cane sticks, smooth river stones bone, horn, gourd necks, and other hand-made utensils in the manner of her ancestors. Currently her work is being exhibited at the National Museum of the American Indian, fourth floor, Smithsonian Mall. She has several works in the permanent collection of the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark. She also sells her work at the Department of Interior Indian Craft Shop in Washington D.C., At the Buffalo Sun in Miami, Okla. And directly from her home-studio in Welch.

Anita Fields

Anita Fields

Anita Fields belongs to the Osage and Plains Indian community in the Midwest and creates conceptual installation pieces, often incorporating abstract images of traditional clothing and artifacts. According to the Women Artists of the American West web site, her use of domestic motifs is intended to honor all women, particularly those of Indian descent. Although the mainstream continuity of Indian clay-art traditions is dominated by artisans in New Mexico and Arizona and throughout the Navajo Nation, Fields is one of only a few American Indian potters not found in those areas.

Fields was reared in Hominy and influenced by the traditional Osage ribbon work, clothing, and blankets. “The dresses convey my attitudes toward the strength of women and how native peoples show remarkable resourcefulness and adaptability toward their environment. The clothing Indian women created shows great pride, dignity, and hope in a culture facing insurmountable odds,” Fields said in regard to her series called Native American Dresses. After graduating college, Fields made a commitment to become a full-time clay artist. According to WAAW, by working clay she feels that the material is transformed into this powerful medium because it was created by the natural forces of the earth and time. Fields finishes her work with a Middle Eastern “terra sigillata” finishing medium used on ancient and Mediterranean ceramics.

[Submitted by Bruce R. The demolition is running ahead of schedule, according to Ben West, Superintendent of Pawhuska Public Schools.

"All the debris has to be removed and the basement has to be filled with dirt or shale and compacted to be ready to build on later on down the road."

The 20 year master plan includes an auditorium with 1,000 to 1,500 seats.

Pawhuska Schools looked at converting the old High School building to a fine arts center, but the cost (estimated to be about 13 1/2 million dollars) was prohibitive.

"There is too much we need to do right now to be able to convert the building. We're not going to ask Pawhuska tax payers to start any new bond issues."

Mr. West said some of the current projects include:

The demolition of the old High School building.

The High School building project, adding a classroom to the front of the building.

The Elementary school building project, getting it ready to house grades 4 through 6.

The Indian Camp school building project, getting it ready to house grades K through 3.

In addition, there is a much needed drainage project on the High School grounds planned.

Bids are being planned to be taken by September first for the construction and drainage projects. All the projects are planned to be completed by August 1, 2011.

When asked how the 20 year plan will be funded, Mr. West responded, "As current bond issues are fulfilled we will try to renew them." That will offset costs without raising new taxes.

Pictures are available through this link.

This means that trust must be established between those two offices first. We have seen the result of the lack of trust between those two offices over the past four years. It has hampered the ability of the executive branch to get as much work done for our people as it could have over the past four years. The bottom line here is that there is much work to be done for the Osage people through the executive branch and establishing trust between the Principal Chief and Assistant Principal Chief will only enhance our ability to move forward and get meaningful work done for our people and our employees who serve our Osage people.

In addition, I see the role of the Assistant Principal Chief as being an advisory role to the Principal Chief. Through my work with the Oklahoma State Legislature I have experience and many contacts to offer the Principal Chief during decision making processes. I would be one member of the team of executive branch employees who could offer experience and expertise in many areas that would allow for more informed decision making by our top executive. I look forward to being able to use my experience and knowledge to serve the best interest of our Osage people.

Of course the Assistant Principal Chief serves as a liaison between the Executive branch and the Legislative Branch of our new Osage Government. I am there to represent the Executive Branch. I will also serve as the liaison to bring legislation back to the executive branch to start the cooperative effort of debating and passing legislation that will serve our Osage people. This is not a role in which the Assistant Principal Chief acts alone or on behalf of Congress. I understand that my role is one of being a member of the Executive branch team. This does not mean that I will blindly follow but it does mean that I will educate myself on the issues at hand, understand the stance on those issues of the executive branch team, offer my questions or concerns to be addressed by executive branch team members, and then move forward to Congress to explain the stance of the executive branch on whatever legislation is being discussed or debated.

2. How involved should the Assistant Principal Chief be when it comes to debates and discussion on legislative items during congressional sessions?

The Assistant Principal Chief should be an active participant when it comes to debates and discussion on legislative items during congressional sessions. I am there to represent the point of view of the executive branch and that means the employees and the people of the Osage Nation as well as our Principal Chief. It will be my job to explain the intent of legislation to the executive branch through my discussions with members of congress and to explain any problems the executive may have with items of legislation as we look down the road as to how any item of legislation could affect our Nation in the future. We must always look to future administrations when we are talking about legislation and how our work today will affect our people and our government from this day forward. I will not participate in the personality conflicts that have plagued our current congress but will work with the executive branch and the Principal Chief to do what is best for our people and our government. This means that I will not take any side but that of our people when congress is divided. I will not take a side voting yes or no on a tie simply because of who may have sponsored the legislation on the table. I believe my experience in the Oklahoma State Legislature will help me to do an exemplary job as Assistant Principal Chief when discussing and debating legislative items.

3. Overall respect and community feeling is alive and well during our In-Lon-Shka dances. How will you bring this same respect to our government?

I have participated in our In-Lon-Shka dances since I was a baby and have grown up in that way of life to the point that it has affected the way I conduct myself when dealing with any situation.

First of all I would like to point out that every participant in our dances has a role to play and they do not deviate out of that role or things do not run smoothly. It is the same with our Osage government. Every Osage has a role to play in our government whether it be a citizen voice, an employee or an elected official and we must not deviate out of those roles or we have problems in our government. We all have a job to do and we must focus on that job rather than trying to micromanage or worry about everyone else’s job. For instance, I want to be your Assistant Principal Chief, I don’t want to be your Principal Chief during this administration nor do I want to be your director of operations, chief of staff or member of congress. I have a job to do and I will do it well.

I would also like to point out that when it comes to our dances people put their personal or family differences aside as those differences have no place in our dance and the dance is much bigger than the individuals participating. It is the same with our government. Our government should not be run around personality differences but for the best interest of our Osage people and our Osage government which is much bigger than the sum of individuals serving our government. We must begin to put those personality differences aside when we are working for our people in the capacity of an elected official or Osage Nation employee.

Finally I would like to say that our people are a generous people when it comes to our In-Lon-Shka. We finalize each of our dances with a give away. We must have that same spirit of giving when serving as an elected official or employee of the Nation. The work we do is not about us personally but rather about our people. We have to keep that in the front of our minds at all times rather than falling into the trap of worrying about egos, personalities, or differences of opinion.

Senator Joe Sweeden Announces Candidacy

State Senator runs for County Commissioner

Joe Sweeden, candidate for Osage County Commissioner, District 1

State Senator Joe Sweeden has announced his candidacy for District 1 Osage County Commissioner.

Sweeden has represented Osage County for 12 years at the State Capitol. As Senator, Sweeden continually supported the Senior Nutrition program, fighting yearly to ensure seniors were not cut from the state budget. He is an adamant supporter of the best fire departments in the State – the Osage County Rural Fire Fighter Program - by making sure State Funding is brought back to the county, providing fire trucks, equipment and training. Sweeden also obtains annual funding supporting rural towns through the REAP program, allowing communities to receive grants for upgrades and build infrastructure.

As Chairman of the County Government Oversight Committee, Senator Sweeden is an integral part of policy making for County Governments. As a member of the Transportation and Appropriations Committee, he has working knowledge of managing State and County road programs. Senator Sweeden has been developing and working with the State’s multi-billion dollar budget for 12 years.

Senator Sweeden plans to evaluate the road conditions of District 1, then establish a long-term plan and seek permanent funding to upgrade roads. “It is important we look at a long-term solution to our road problems and explore new solutions to this age-old problem. Continuing on the path we are currently on will leave us with the same roads in five years that we have now,” Sweeden said.

Sweeden also believes the new facility at the Osage County fairgrounds is an excellent source of potential income for the County. The entire Fairgrounds facility could provide an economic boost to the area if it is promoted properly. “The new Arena is an exceptional addition to the Fairgrounds. With proper management, I believe the entire facility could bring a measurable increase in our tax revenue,” said Sweeden.

Senator Sweeden stated, “The position of County Commissioner is manager of your Tax Dollars. The people of the area have entrusted me for the past 12 years to manage their money and represent them on a State level. I look forward to the opportunity to continue my service to District 1 on the County level.” Sweeden believes that his 12 years of legislative experience serving the people of District 1 has prepared him to bring a new and unique direction to the position of County Commissioner.

Joe and his wife, Sheila, live in Pawhuska with their two daughters who attend Pawhuska Schools. Senator Sweeden has a Bachelor’s Degree from Oklahoma State University.

Michael

Government Bans 700MHz Wireless Mics

Government Bans 700MHz Wireless Mics

Christianity Today reported on the 700Mhz Wireless Mic Ban 5/18/09

The FCC has banned use of Wireless microphones in the 700MHz range as of June 12, 2010. There was a notification of the ban on June 12, 2009 in conjunction with the move to digital television.

For those who are using wireless microphones - you need to check the frequency of your equipment. Churches and other groups using wireless equipment in the 700MHz range must stop using them as of June 12, 2010. The reason is that frequency was in between the old analog television channels, and the transition from analog to digital is complete. Now the 700MHz range is opened up for public safety use.

The FCC's official statement ( found here) says "The wireless microphones that had been operating in the old TV broadcast channels can cause harmful interference to these public safety and wireless consumer services. Therefore, all users of wireless microphones (or certain low power auxiliary stations) that operate on any of the frequencies in the 700 MHz band – including both licensed users (under Part 74) and unlicensed users – now have to stop operating in this band.

The FCC is only prohibiting the use of wireless microphones (and similar devices) that operate in the 700 MHz Band. You may continue to use wireless microphones (and similar devices) that operate on other broadcast frequencies. Microphones and other similar devices with cords are not affected by the FCC’s decision."

If your church is using a wireless microphone, they need to determine if the broadcast range is in the 700MHz band. If so, it will need to be replaced.

For a complete explanation on what needs to happen, and how this may affect your church or organization - Christianity Today posted an article on 5/18/09 - here. At that time, they didn't know when the rule would go into effect.

Michael

Osage Chief Responds to U.S. Tenth Circuit Action

Native American Caucus Weighs in on Issue, Outlines Negative Economic Impact

Osage Nation Principal Chief Jim Gray

Native American Caucus Weighs in on Issue,
Outlines Negative Economic Impact

The Osage Nation Has 90 Days to Determine Appeal

TULSA, Okla. – The U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday May 25, 2010 denied the Osage Nation’s official request for rehearing of its March ruling in favor of the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Osage Nation Chief Jim Gray said he was “shocked” at the court’s denial to even hear the basic arguments in the case.

“Am I shocked? Yes,” Gray said. “Am I disappointed? You bet. But, am I conceding? No, I’m not.”

The Osage Nation has 90 days to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Gray said he owes it to the Osage Nation to use that time to consider all the alternatives. But he said the Nation clearly has several legal options ahead and, given what’s at stake, all options will be explored.

“While I’m going to use my allotted time for consideration of an appeal, let there be no misunderstanding that the position of the Osage Nation is clear – we have a reservation,” Gray said. “If we concede or drop this case, we are admitting we have not had a reservation since 1906 – which is absolutely untrue and contrary to all legal precedent.”

Gray said a ruling in favor of the Tax Commission would result in a net loss for the state. “What the Tax Commission declares is a win for the State of Oklahoma is actually a loss when you consider the financial consequences to the state,” Gray said. “What the state gains in income tax is multiplied in losses. At a time when Oklahoma is laying off teachers and critical services are crippled, it makes no sense to gut such a viable portion of the state’s economy.

“In trying this case, the Oklahoma Tax Commission is putting millions of Oklahoma dollars in jeopardy. The funding provided by the Environmental Protection Agency for much-needed, reservation-based services would disappear. The state would have to assume responsibility and liability for providing those services.”

The Osage Nation contends it has a federally recognized reservation which makes its tribal members living and working on the reservation, under federal law, exempt from paying state income taxes. The Oklahoma Tax Commission says the reservation was disestablished, but failed to identify clear language in any act of Congress which supports that claim.

Ironically, a letter in support of the Osage Nation from the Native American Caucus of the Oklahoma House of Representatives was delivered to Gov. Brad Henry earlier Tuesday afternoon. The letter was drafted after Chief Gray addressed the Caucus earlier this month and provided a detailed explanation of how much the state stands to lose by winning this case.

The letter states, in part: “Although this lawsuit was brought by an Indian nation, we believe this is not solely an ‘Indian issue.’ The real economic facts reveal our State relies heavily on the Osage Reservation’s continued recognition and legal statutes as the Nation’s Indian Country. The Caucus believes it is in the best interest of the State … to resolve the lawsuit without further litigation …”

“It’s pretty clear that when people learn more about what’s at stake, they tend to side with us,” Gray said. “I am hopeful Gov. Henry will feel the same way.”

McDonald's Announces Recall

The recall of McDonald's Shrek Glasses was announced and proclaimed a health hazard by the CPSC.

If you've bought McDonald's Shrek glasses and actually plan on using them - they've been recalled. It seems the Chinese manufacturer used Cadmium in some of the paint. Supposedly, the McDonald's website is going to have information on returning the glasses or getting a refund - but that site seems to be down right now.

The Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) said that long-term exposure to Cadmium can "lead to adverse health effects."

These glasses were sold through local McDonald's restaurants from May through June. While Pawhuska does not have a McDonalds, we do have families that visit the restaurant. Pawhuska Dot Com wants to caution our families about this health risk.

If you have any of these glasses, the CPSC warns that you should stop using them immediately.

If you need further information about this recall, you can contact McDonald’s at (800) 244-6227 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. central time Monday through Friday.

Michael

Happy Mother's Day!

Best wishes for Mother's day 2010!

Today is Mother's Day! It isn't a holiday made up by the greeting card companies, though who can blame them for capitalizing on this and most holidays.

In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association.

"She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world." Louisa Taylor of the Canwest News Service commented in an article on May 11, 2008.

President Woodrow Wilson was the first President to sign a law making the holiday official in the U.S. Each President since then signed a proclamation proclaiming a national recognition for Mother's Day.

In our home we observe Mother's Day each year. The mother of my children receives breakfast in bed, and usually a card and a gift.

One sister is a mother, and her only child will no doubt celebrate this day with her in mind.

This is the first year I've not been able to talk to my mother on Mother's Day. My wife and I are now both orphans in the sense that neither of us have living parents. So we will console each other, and my children will tell their mama how great a mom she is, and that will bring some sense of continuance - no longer looking outside our home for a mother, but recognizing my wife's role as now -the- matriarch of our family.

In many churches today, mention will be made of the many mothers who were noticed in the Bible, not the least of these is Mary the mother of Jesus Christ. What an example of motherhood, of loving care for her child. From conception to the cross, Mary was there for her son, and full of faith in the God who graced her with the responsibilities of nurturing God's only flesh born son. Can you imagine that, moms, when you have a hard time raising your children, your child? Think about Mary for a moment, and let God give you His grace for raising your children, your child. With His help, you can do it - even through the teen aged years!

God bless all mothers on this nationally recognized Mother's Day!

God bless the fathers who participate with the mothers raising their children together.

Michael

Pawhuska Blood Donors Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure May 4

Pawhuska Blood Donors Benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure May 4

April 26, 2010 ─ Pawhuska blood donors have the opportunity to doubly give in an Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) community blood drive sponsored by the Pawhuska Hospital Auxiliary. Anyone who is healthy and 17 or older has the option to ‘doubly give’ and benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure® at the blood drive from 2 to 6 pm, May 4, in the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall at 814 Prudom, in Pawhuska.

During May, OBI will make a contribution to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, Tulsa Affiliate in honor of each blood donor who chooses to forgo the OBI tote bag. In this way, donors can give twice – by first, giving blood and then, allowing OBI to use funds otherwise allocated for the donor incentive item to fund breast cancer treatment and research.

“We are very excited for this campaign to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” said John Armitage, M.D., Oklahoma Blood Institute president and chief executive officer. “OBI blood donors help ensure necessary blood products are available on-demand for the daughters, mothers and grandmothers in our community who fight breast cancer.”

Because there is no substitute for blood, the supply must constantly be renewed. Although all blood types are needed, those with O Negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. According to the American Association of Blood Banks, those with O Negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population. However, O Negative blood can be used by anyone in an emergency situation when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified.

Oklahoma Blood Institute is the twelfth largest, non-profit blood center in America. In 2009, more than 198,000 donations provided blood for patients in more than 150 medical facilities in Oklahoma and North Central Texas. OBI employs nearly 700 Oklahomans and works with an estimated 800 volunteers and 2,600 drive coordinators.

For more information or to make an appointment to donate, call Oklahoma Blood Institute at (877) 340-8777 or schedule online at http://www.obi.org.

Sara Wilson, CBC
Communications Specialist - Tulsa Center
Oklahoma Blood Institute

(918) 477-0423 Office
(918) 671-6907 Cell
(918) 477-0440 Fax

Office/Mailing Address: 4601 East 81st Street
Tulsa, OK 74137

Feel Good.
Veterans Day

A history of Veterans Day

Veterans Day - A History
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Soldiers of the 353rd Infantry near a church at Stenay, Meuse in France, wait for the end of hostilities. This photo was taken at 10:58 a.m., on November 11, 1918, two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and

Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and

Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible."

President Eisenhower signing HR7786, changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. From left: Alvin J. King, Wayne Richards, Arthur J. Connell, John T. Nation, Edward Rees, Richard L. Trombla, Howard W. Watts

On that same day, President Eisenhower sent a letter to the Honorable Harvey V. Higley, Administrator of Veterans' Affairs (VA), designating him as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee.

In 1958, the White House advised VA's General Counsel that the 1954 designation of the VA Administrator as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee applied to all subsequent VA Administrators. Since March 1989 when VA was elevated to a cabinet level department, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has served as the committee's chairman.

The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates.

The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans service organizations and the American people.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Information and Photos provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs - 810 Vermont Avenue, NW - Washington, DC 20420

The Grille opens from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM and specializes in "Breakfast Anytime". It is not in competition with the other restaurants here in Pawhuska but is here to offer an alternative and fill a hole. The Bluestem Grille offers 10 varieties of Chef Jackson's signature Omelettes and includes a lunch menu featuring what has been discribed as the Oklahoma's greatest Patty Melt. Chef Jackson also announced recently that he will soon be open for evenings and present his fusion Southwest/Southern Cusine.
[Submitted by Bluesem_Grille]

Time to remember - those who serve!

I must share it with no further comment.)

A New Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

LCDR Jeff Giles, SC, USN
30th Naval Construction Regiment
OIC, Logistics Cell One
Al Taqqa

Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving

It wasn't sung during the hour long series episode.

But some of the essence of what Thanksgiving is about was.

Thanksgiving, traditionally, is a day of giving thanks to God. In practice in the United States today, this national holiday helps us to remember things we can be thankful for. Our family, our friends, our stuff filling our homes, the roasted turkey and stuffing, the pumpkin pie with whipped topping, the celery sticks and olives.

It is a time to pause from our busy lives and consider the good in our lives, and then to acknowledge the source of all that is truly good.

"We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing,
He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing:
Sing praises to His name He forgets not His own."

At a time when all round us seems to be changing, it is good to pause and recognize God, the giver of every good gift.

Michael
